Seven

Realizing Joanna was both exhausted and rattled from the conversation that had just taken place, Dwight did his best to shuttle her out of the house after her announcement. Susie and Marcus had looked taken aback by the way Dwight stood up and blurted a flimsy excuse, but they hadn’t argued. Instead, each had hugged Dwight and Joanna before sending them both on their way. Dwight knew he’d made the right decision when he saw Joanna breathe in the warm July air and visibly relax. Jo had never been one to particularly enjoy hot summer days.

They’d elected to walk to Susie’s house and were now ambling home together through a field that was owned by one of Marcus’s cousins. The field had fresh grass and a smattering of wildflowers. It was a pretty sight. That, combined with the lingering sun overhead, lent Dwight a feeling of calm he hadn’t even realized he’d been missing.

“Every time I walk through this field, I get such a feeling of satisfaction, it always makes me wonder if I should’ve been a farmer.”

Joanna sputtered. “You? Dwight, you love working in the lumberyard.”

“It’s true, I do. But that said, there’s something about an open field in the summer that makes me feel as if everything is right and good in the world. Don’t you think?”

Looking skeptical, she scanned the area carefully. At last she grinned. “Jah, I can see it feeling all right and good here . . . if one doesn’t mind getting stung by bees.” She waved a hand toward a patch of wayward clover. “They’re everywhere, Dwight.”

“Oh, they won’t harm ya. They’re just buzzing around the clover and dandelions.”

“And wildflowers. And, uh, myself.”

“If you ignore them, they’ll ignore you. See, they’re just looking for pollen.”

“I suppose.” She still looked wary, though.

Glad to see her not stewing about Susie, he continued to tease. “I never realized you were so frightened of bumblebees.”

Joanna didn’t disappoint. She lifted her chin and popped a hand on her hip. “I’m not afraid of them. I just don’t want to get stung.”

“Have you ever gotten stung before?” Maybe she’d had an allergic reaction he had forgotten about.

“Nee. I guess I’ve just always been afraid of the unknown.” She wrinkled her nose. “At least where, um, bees are concerned.”

Thinking about the two of them and how he’d been a little reluctant to tell her his feelings in case it ruined their friendship, Dwight said, “Uncharted territory can be scary, I suppose.” When she looked at him in confusion, he added, “Well, you know . . . bee stings, relationships . . . life. Every day gives us something new to tackle. Ain’t so?”

“That’s true. I suppose I do need to stop worrying so much about new things. And maybe stop taking too much for granted too.”

“Like what?”

“Like now.” As they started walking again, she smiled at him. “It’s a lovely day, the sun is out, and I’m walking with you. I mean . . . a longtime friend. That’s a lot to be grateful for.
